The INSTA-SPLINTS II™ Full Body Mattress Vacuum Splint, otherwise known as a Vacuum Spineboard (VSB), is quickly becoming the preferred patient handling and immobilization device of choice, due to its ability to provide security and comfort as it conforms better to body shape over traditional “blanket padding” methods used for immobilization. The VSB was designated by the US Air Force as the preferred method of external spinal immobilization during aeromedical transport of patients with suspected unstable thoracolumbar spine fractures, since it distributes weight over a larger surface area, thereby decreasing the risk of pressure points and skin pressure ulceration.
