Wings That Won’t Retreat in the Sun’s Heat

Wing Inflatables’ Welding Techniques Keep the Fleet On Their Feet

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (September 9, 2015) —  Today’s Rigid Inflatable Boats (RIBs) must perform in some pretty rough environments. When considering warfighters’ missions, those requirements run the gamut from daily patrols to special operations in austere conditions. These were some of the primary issues that the team at Wing Inflatables were looking to address when they developed their Combat Rubber Raiding Crafts (CRRCs).

Wing Inflatables has been making boat sponsons for more than thirty years. Currently, the company provides sponsons for approximately 90 percent of the U.S. military’s Rigid Hull Inflatable Boats (RHIB). It was only recently, the Department of Defense (DOD) approached Wing about producing CRRCs that would replace legacy inflatable boat systems with a high-performance, Berry Amendment-compliant, Made in America solution, using the same materials as Wing sponsons. The Wing team jumped at the opportunity and the result was their P-Series (P4.2,P4.7,P5.3,P5.8) CRRCs.

Wing’s reputation for excellent construction and cutting edge technology is apparent when considering the trademark method that sets their products apart from their competition. The standout feature of a Wing RIB is its durability. While legacy craft primarily use glue in the construction of their boats, the team at Wing Inflatables thermo-welds all air-holding seams on all their craft.

“Glue fails,” stated Jennifer Maxfield, vice president of international business development at Wing Inflatables. “Think about if our boats are being used in places with blazing heat like Afghanistan. They are delivered onto a blistering tarmac, then unloaded and inflated, over and over again. In time, the glued seams will fail. Our welding process helps mitigate the effects of heat and that constant contracting and expanding. It makes the craft more durable.

When considering replacements to the U.S. Air Force Guardian Angel program, Wing Inflatables’ P4.7 CRRC went toe-to-toe with the competition over the course of a robust two-year evaluation period to determine the best platform. The Wing P-4.7 was recommended as the “craft of choice.” Due to a partnership on these efforts, ADS, Inc. was awarded a contract to deliver the cost effective Wing solution to U.S. Air Force Rescue Squadrons across the world.

“The entire program would not be possible without everybody’s input. From the Wing to ADS and the U.S. Air Force, it was definitely a team effort. It really goes beyond each group’s role within the program, even after an award is made because at the end of the day, we are all stakeholders. The success of this endeavor is a result of great partnerships. I’m proud to be a part of this solution.”

                                                                                                                                            – Parker Jarvis, ADS Business Development Manager

Wing Inflatables and ADS have partnered to support the U.S. Army’s Tank-Automotive and Armaments Command Life Cycle Management Center (TACOM LCMC) to develop and supply a family of cost-effective inflatable boats and outboard motors (FoBaM) capable of fulfilling Army mission requirements. When implemented, this solution will develop into an efficient acquisition process to provide short- and long-term sustainment.

While Wing primarily serves DOD customers, it also serves Department of Homeland Security (U.S. Coast Guard, Federal Law Enforcement Training Centers and Border Patrol), National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), State and Local Municipalities, Urban Search and Rescue (FEMA) and U.S. Foreign Allies .

ADS, as a partner for Wing Inflatables, has been huge. The force of personnel they bring to the table, especially with their integration into the U.S. Military forces has been a tremendous help for us. Many of the individuals we currently work with at ADS were former operators of CRRCs. That’s great because they can validate the difference of our craft verses a legacy craft.” – Jennifer Maxfield, Vice President, International New Business Development

EOD’s Streamlined “Leak, Seal and Pack” Solution

By | New Products, Video | No Comments

Department of Defense (DOD) Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) warfare capabilities exist to locate, identify, render safe and transport unexploded chemical ordinance to specified locations. Across all branches of service, EOD technicians embrace the same basic evolution of “Leak, Seal and Pack.”

To address this mission requirement, commands would each develop their own Initial Entry Team (IET) kit,, usually an expensive and cumbersome task with numerous variances from their other service counterparts. In short, the equipment used to accomplish the “leak, seal and pack” evolution was disjointed and varied from service to service. This somewhat hindered community effectiveness due interoperability issues. The question was, how to leverage EOD technician expertise, across services, in an attempt to mitigate variances in equipment and increase effectiveness. That’s when ADS got the phone call from United Tactical Supply (UTS) on behalf of the U.S. Navy EOD community. Recognizing that the issue was one of interoperability, standardization and effectiveness at a reasonable price, the partnership was designed to develop an adaptable kit, keeping the different requirements of the end-users in mind.

Recognizing that the issue was one of interoperability, standardization and effectiveness at a reasonable price, we here at ADS partnered with United Tactical Supply (UTS) to develop an adaptable kit, keeping the different requirements of the end-users in mind.

Feedback, knowledge, and real-world experiences from all U.S. EOD communities are at the core of the development of the Specialized Chemical Ordnance Transport System (SCOTS). Over the course of a year, we worked to identify EOD technician requirements, using them as a blueprint to develop a kit that addressed their concerns by using the latest products and technology in the industry. We filled the capability gaps, not just for the U.S. Navy’s EOD community, but also for all branches of the military. This kit is truly built by the EOD community, for the EOD community. Until the creation of the SCOTS kit, no standardized kit, with service-wide applicability, had existed.

“We at ADS, teamed up with UTS and the EOD end-use customers to develop a kit that could be used by every branch of service. Whereas before, EOD teams had their own kits, the SCOTS kit filled the interoperability void perfectly.”   – Brad Riddick, Special Missions Business Development Manager

Each component has been carefully considered and evaluated, not only by EOD community expert technicians, but also by ADS and UTS experts. Some components include, activated carbon cloth technology, combined with a fully validated individual decontamination system. This technology not only aids sealing and containment of chemical rounds, it also allows for swift decontamination. The entire system is contained in a portable transport case, and can be tailored for multiple chemical round scenarios.

We have fielded it [SCOTS] and, to date, everyone we fielded it to has given exceptionally positive feedback on it,” said Riddick. “It’s applicable, cost-effective and suitable to the task at hand. It’s a win for everybody.

The SCOTS is a combination of manufactured nylon components, vetted decontamination media and activated carbon cloth, in conjunction with procedures directly out of the EOD publications, that make this a total solution for the decontamination, sealing, containment and transport of chemical ordnance.

ABOUT United Tactical Supply United Tactical Supply (UTS) is a well-established leader in the decontamination market, with a proven success in meeting the needs of consumers from government, military, law enforcement, civilian and corporate establishments. U.S. DOD & FDA Compliant Integrated Mobile Hospital Solutions

By | New Products, Video | No Comments

Pop quiz: Would you rather call 40-plus vendors to determine the interoperability of their products in order to build a field medical facility, or would you prefer to make one phone call for one item to address every requirement on your list? Chances are, you are going to choose the second option. That’s exactly the type of challenge we at ADS, Inc. love to tackle for our customers.

For the last three years, ADS’s medical team has been working with HDT and a variety of our medical partners to develop a complete, turnkey remote medical facility solution. This solution can be procured as a single part number, customized to meet specific mission requirements and can be delivered to any destination in the world, kitted and ready to go.

Because of our strong ties with our manufacturing and service partners, we were able to develop a fully-integrated solution…every component represented in this kit works seamlessly with each other. By developing the field hospital solution from the ground up with our partners, we were able to provide our customer with the capabilities they required, when and where they needed it, without the massive time and resource investment that would have been needed on their end had they tried to develop it on their own.

This challenge originally stemmed from the State Department, via the Africa Contingency Operations Training & Assistance (ACOTA) program as a requirement to supply a United Nations (UN) approved Level II hospital to Togo to support Mali, a designated area of conflict. Once the requirements were defined, we worked with more than 45 manufacturers and service providers to address the stringent UN requirements, including everything from power sources, support systems and on-site training. The resulting solution is a UN-approved, standardized mobile hospital unit that can be transported anywhere in the world via 6-20ft shipping containers.

This mobile, deployable hospital system truly is all-inclusive. It provides just about everything you would expect to find in a traditional hospital, aside from consumables, including power generation and water support, in addition to the surgical, life support, hospital and dental capabilities as outlined by the UN.

As a humanitarian asset, the facility’s capacity, outlined by the UN, is to perform three to four surgical operations per day, while at the same time providing hospitalization for 10-20 sick or wounded for up to seven days. At least 40 outpatients can be seen and 5-10 dental consultations can be given every day. The facility is also designed to accommodate medical supplies, fluids and consumables for 60 days.

That’s no small order, but our initial solution was so effective, we are currently working on the second iteration of the system. Like the original request, future requests can be ordered through the U.S. State Department for distribution through the UN and ACOTA to a designated conflict area. ADS also has access to a variety of other simple, efficient contract options that can facilitate the procurement of these field medical hospitals for DOD or Federal Agencies.
